The Center for Technologies of Ubiquitous Computing and Humanity (TOUCH Center) under the theme of “leading to smart living of the future”, is organized by the researchers from multiple disciplines such as information communication technology, medical and psychology, literature and art, architecture and design areas to develop creative smart living products and quality mental sensation living spaces in the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan. The researches are based on cooperation intelligences and user- driven innovations.  

Description of Concept

TOUCH Center supported by the National Science Council, Taiwan, plans to develop the creative human- centric living products and quality living spaces for the future. TOUCH Center has launched NCKU Aspire Home and NCKU Art Corridor, which successfully integrate technology and design together. After feasibility tests, the developed smart living products and spaces are demonstrated in NCKU Aspire Home for aspiring evaluation by the visitors. Currently, NCKU Aspire Home is open weekly and NCKU Art Corridor exhibits interactive arts daily to attract visitors. The visitors were asked to fill questionnaires to give the improvement of living products and spaces. So, all the demonstrations are constantly modified based on visitors’ feedbacks. Besides, the TOUCH Center also establishes a highly interactive lifestyle story design platform to collect intelligence through Web 2.0 technology. Besides, the TOUCH Center also conducts design workshops and conferences to collect the up-to-date technologies for future digital life.  

References and Track Record

TOUCH Center recently gains a lot of attentions from various activities and visitors, when they visited the NCKU Aspire Home and NCKU Creative Art Corridor. Many national newspapers and TV news reports all gave positive report about the integrated works conduced by TOUCH Center. Currently, several companies requested technical transfers as well as future cooperation. The TOUCH Center has shown the creations in future living technologies and brought innovation impacts to industrial companies. 

TOUCH Center as the research center of smart living technologies is organized by 61 professors, who lead at least 2 graduate students per professor. Thus, with 10 administration staff members in cooperation of 20 undergraduate internships, TOUCH Center has the manpower with at least 212 research fellows and engineers. 

TOUCH Center supported the MIT-NCKU Nightmarket Workshop, in which we not only went through the concept of collective intelligence from team works but also attracted active responses from citizens of Tainan during exhibitions and creations (http://www.nightmarket.org/2008/index_e.html).

TOUCH Center in the past two years with the activities exhibited in NCKU Aspire Home and NCKU Creative Art Corridor gained a lot of attentions by the national magazines, newspapers and TV companies, who extensively reported the successfulness of the smart living systems.
