Description of Concept

ITL was founded in 2003 by Emilia-Romagna Region as a non-profit foundation and as a supporting expert body to operate in the transport and logistics field. ITL main shareholders are: Provincia di Bologna, Provincia di Piacenza, Provincia di Ravenna, Università Cattolica Sacro Cuore - PC, Università degli Studi di Bologna, Regione Emilia-Romagna, Comune di Piacenza, Provincia di Parma, UnionCamere Emilia Romagna, Autorità Portuale di Ravenna, Università degli Studi di Parma, Comune di Ravenna, Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio-Emilia. It was founded on public initiative and, therefore, has embedded institutional relations with the main regional public administrations. ITL relies on a network of three operational premises in Bologna, Piacenza and Ravenna, which represent the main regional transport nodes operating at the national and international levels. ITL has a triple mission, of Research, Training and Professional Services. ITL plays a central role of coordination, dissemination and combination of the resources already available in existing organisations in these three fields of activity. As such, the Institute does not only develop its own services in these activities, but it also brings the mpetent actors to perform these tasks.

References and Track Record

Studies and experiments on the field performed in the last two years of activities confirmed the initial vision.  A great potential of improvement was detected at the company level and at the cluster (district level), and ITL initiatives are more and more appreciated by local stakeholders (municipalities, entrepreneurial associations, companies and logistic operators).  With reference to the latter projects ITL developed the following pilot activities in collaboration with regional stakeholders:

- involving manufacturing companies and logistics operators dealing with inbound freight flows rationalization (in Reggio Emilia and Bologna),

- logistics cooperation and logistics services development for SMEs in industrial areas (in Bologna and Modena),

- strengthening of the logistics supply of small operators (in Parma),

- logistics outsourcing in mechanical companies (in Piacenza and Ferrara).

ITL has founded together with other 15 institutions the European Network of Logistics Competence Centres “Open ENLoCC”. ITL is also representing the Emilia-Romagna region in the operational activities of the “Regions for Digital Ecosystems – REDEN” network, recently established by more than 10 European regions.
