Description of Concept 

IUL (Integrative Usage Lab) is intended to become one of the most important platforms for studying the ICT usage in France providing a full range of qualitative and quantitative analyses using outstanding methodologies. For this purpose IUL has been created both by an academic institution (LUTIN-CNRS USR 2809) and an industrial Partner (BERTIN TECHNOLOGIES). IUL will be located within the ‘Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie’ in Paris, the biggest science museum in Europe, providing the best visibility in France and outside.  The IUL Living lab will permit to foster a joint work on ICT Usage between academic and industrial research laboratories in a more rigorous way, an interdisciplinary mode associating academic disciplines and more applied disciplines. The aims of IUL are: 1) Providing a technical platform (especially Usability Mobile Platform) for testing the usability of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), 2) Fostering the exchanges between Academic Research and Industry, 3) Promoting the ICT Usability Studies through the Science and Industry Museum to a very large audience.   

References and Track Record 

A number of services are provided both to industry or academic institutions. Industrial services concern often usability testing or ergonomic approach while for academic more fundamental researches are involved. Services offered by IUL will be:

- Usability testing with an observational approach both at the userlab and outside the userlab (in the real environment of work or life). One of our strongest points is to develop studies in an ambulatory way (Usability Mobile Platform).

- On-line behaviour tracking by means of video goggles and video indexing and interpretation. The recording takes place outside.

- On-line tracking in more constrained environment (scenario) and virtual environment. Behaviour simulations are also possible.

- Experimental methodologies with eye-tracking and multiple physiological indices: EEG, ECG, EFRPs for evaluating stress, working load and fatigue.

And different fields of intervention:

- Knowledge technologies (Web tools for topologies, Web trails analysis, both using automated methods in tracking mass behaviour as well as individual ones, virtual class tools, e-learning...)

- Mobility services using various technologies such as GPS or Bluetooth; usability and acceptability studies.

- Image services (HDTV, IP TV on portable phones, scalable video, EPGs, ergonomics and marketing approaches)

- Video games quality assessment during the design process (with specific methods in ergonomics and game design testing and the help of a fuzzy logic evaluator)

For industries (easy-to-used ITC products), researchers (application of fundamental results), students (learning methods, how to use observation devices, and the making of observational studies).
