The Food Living Lab gathers all major stakeholders of the food innovation sector in Switzerland (academia, agricultural and food research and the food industry). The Food Living Lab is one of the key partners in an open innovation strategy of the Swiss food industry. The Living Lab brings food research and specific aspects (product & food process) in the Living Lab community.

Description

Swiss Food Research, the driving force of the Food Living Lab is unique in Switzerland, representing enterprises of the food and related sectors (producers of ingredients and equipment) as well as consumer's organisations and research institutions (academia and research stations). Swiss Food Research is officially recognized as the innovation network for the Swiss Food Sector by the Swiss Confederation.  

The main goal of the Food Living Lab is the generation of new technologies, products or services through applied research projects in close collaboration with industrial partners and end users. With the scientific competencies and infrastructures of our network members we are able to help in a very efficient way industrial partners (mainly SME's) to realize innovative developments. The industrial partners are the ones who will have to produce the goods and/or the technology to be sold on the market while the end users will have to validate and make sure at each step of the project the product/process or service will still fulfil their needs. Our developments are always demand or market driven.  The network is mainly acting as a knowledge broker. In the value chain, starting with fundamental research producing new knowledge, to the consumer we are mainly active in the innovation part of the chain. We identify ideas that fit with a market demand. With the scientific competencies and technologies within our network these ideas are developed into marketable technologies, products or services together with industrial partners and end users as validation partners.

References and Track Record

Swiss Food Research is in continuous contact with end-users (consumers) to generate and discuss new ideas. The Food Living Lab is in collaboration with ATIZO (www.atizo.com), a small start-up company and its "web2community". The community of innovators has proposed new food products that do not yet exist on the market. The most interesting ideas have been chosen by Swiss Food Research. These ideas will be screened by feasibility studies in order to select the most promising ones for the development of new innovative products. The concrete product development will be carried out in close collaboration with the community that has proposed the ideas. Swiss Food Research is launching a yearly open call for innovative ideas and projects. Promising ideas are financed in the form of a feasibility study. Projects awith an industrial partner and/or end user.
