The main objective of the Experimental Centre of Ambient Intelligence Services and Applications (CIAMI, from their Spanish acronym) is to become a national and international reference in research and development of the Ambient Intelligence (AmI) paradigm put into practice in the field of prevention, care and promotion of health and wellbeing of the citizens, support for the independent living (AAL paradigm) and social inclusion, and in general the application of AmI paradigm to all services oriented to the citizens at all levels of the value chain: theoretical research, experimental research and proof of concepts, technological development, training and education at a university level, and the final technological transference to the society. It has been launched in 2008 thanks to the support of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce under the Plan Avanza Program and it is managed by ITACA Research Institute and Soluciones TSB, S.A.

Description of the concept

CIAMI Living Lab is an infrastructure that simulates the real environment of a normal home of a citizen combined with the existence of ICT technology massively distributed across the physical space, but as much invisible as possible to the people living in.This infrastructure has been thought not only to test, evaluate and assess applications and services based on the AmI paradigm with real end users living in, but also to test the performance of new technological developments (laboratory perspective) in an environment that recreates a normal citizen home. CIAMI Living Lab has been designed to implement the following research and development actions:

- Foster the active collaboration with organizations representing end users (elderly, disabled, chronic disease patients and citizens in general) with the aim at working together in order to make definitely possible that innovative technological solutions are accepted, usable, accessible and are as much as possible adapted to end users’ needs and contextual conditions.

- Development of innovative, affordable and acceptable technological solutions related to health care support, social care services at home for the citizens.

- Evaluation of technological solutions coming from the industry and from other research initiatives promoted by the development team that CIAMI owns.

- Intensive evaluation of applications and services in the long term, by stressing its use in order to prepare them to be delivered as a reliable product into the market.

References and track record

CIAMI Living Lab is a young laboratory that took 9 months during 2008 to be built physically. There are currently several initiatives running that are exploiting the laboratory resources:

- EU-funded PERSONA project pilot site (www.aal-persona.org) in the scope of AAL development.

- Polytechnic University of Valencia development of technological applications by last year students.

- Partnership alliance with Polytechnic University of Madrid.
